The second version of my smart part finder storage system.

Part Finder II is an enhanced smart storage solution that simplifies the often tedious task of finding electronic components. Building upon the foundation of the original Part finder project, this version also uses light indicators to dramatically reduce search time. Users search for a part using the GParts application, and the drawer containing it illuminates. Each unit houses three storage boxes, each organized with:

  • 30 small drawers (6x5 grid)
  • 9 large drawers (3x3 grid)
  • 1 large lidded compartment

The system is controlled by an ESP32 microcontroller running the software found in the ledDeviceServerEsp32Pio GitHub repository. While a custom PCB (designed in KiCad and available on the long-pcb branch of the same repository) is a key component, the ESP32 is the brains of the operation. The red PCB can be seen in the images of the device's back. A demonstration video shows Part Finder II in action. The rainbow light program is triggered via the VoffCon API, while the search for a specific part and subsequent illumination of the corresponding drawer is initiated through the GParts API.

Part Finder II - in action

This video demonstrates the system's capabilities. It begins with the rainbow light sequence (activated via voffcon) and then shows a part search in GParts, resulting in the correct drawer illuminating.

Installation and Completion

Part Finder II was completed and wall-mounted on May 26, 2024. The first photo shows the final installation, while the remaining images detail the back of the unit.
